Bidding Farewell to January

Goodbye to the longest month there ever was.

I don’t like to wish time away. We’re supposed to embrace it. Enjoy every second. Savor every moment. Soak up the precious time. Bless our sacred time on the earth. Be grateful to be alive….

etc.

But I say this with all my might and all my heart.

GOODBYE JANUARY.

FARE THEE WELL YE MONTH OF DOOM.

I BID YE ADIEU TO ALL YE GLOOM.

GET OFF MY LAWN, JANUARY.

GO TAKE YOUR BUSINESS SOMEWHERE ELSE.

YOU AREN’T WANTED HERE.

NO ONE CARES FOR YOU.

OH THE JOY YOU HAVEN’T BROUGHT.

CONTINUE ONWARD.

SEE YA NEXT YEAR.

BYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Here’s what happened in January. A recap for all of those out there. I feel like most updates from people from this month will look similar, if not exactly the same:

  • I haven’t seen any friends or family this month because at all times, at some point, someone was SICK. We avoided illness the first two weeks of the month, but then…

  • My oldest was struck down with the flu. My kids have gotten pretty sick in their short little lives, but the flu was the sickest I’ve ever seen her. I was caring for her round the clock, trying to get her to eat and drink, taking her temp, giving her meds, and in general, just worrying. She missed a full week of school. I spent it juggling nursing for her and working. And worrying that I’d be struck down next.

  • It snowed! We went out in the snow and left the house in the midst of the flu illness.

  • Then it turned FREEZING COLD for many days. I don’t think I left the house for 3-4 days at one point.

  • Our oven broke. We believe that our kitchen was remodeled in the early 2000s. When we bought our house, we predicted all the appliances would die very close to one another. We were right! Two years ago, our fridge kicked the bucket. Last year, our dishwasher died. A few months ago our faucet was like “HAHA here’s a fun leak you need to take care of.” And then this month, our oven got chronically ill, and during when my daughter had the flu, it decided to give off a very weird smell that signaled “I’m dead for good.”

  • Trump was sworn in as President.

  • Constant doom scrolling as headlines popped up about allllllll the things we dreaded.

  • Plane crash. Renewed all of my fears of flying and also confirmed fears about the direction of where the country is going.

And now, as we step into February, here’s a list of better things. Good things to come in February. Things that make me happy. Things to do to get out of the funk.

(I was originally going to come on here a few days ago and write this as its own post, but then the plane crash happened and I completely spiraled, and couldn’t bring myself to post anything super happy. But I’ll do my best to combine it with the dread…so that there’s a….balance)

  • More sunlight. The sun is setting later, and it’s always a bit more noticeable in February. Gone are the days where my children come home in the dark. Here are the days where the days get brighter.

  • Giggling kids. I love the sound of giggling kids. I recorded a moment about a week ago. Eric was playing the magic wand freeze game that they learned from Bluey. The girls each had a wand in their hands and would point to Eric. He’d freeze in any position he was in. Their laughs were infectious.

  • Baking. Our new oven comes Monday!!! Time to bake again!

  • Valentine’s Day. I used to have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day. I don’t like all the little throw-away toys the girls come home with, but I do love celebrating love. So I’m going to embrace it fully this year.

  • Birthdays! Some lovely people I know have birthdays this month. I love birthdays. It’s also the anniversary of when I first became a mother. And that’s incredibly important to me.

  • Volunteering. I try to get involved at the school. It means I’m contributing to the kids having good activities. It shows the importance of volunteering to my kids. And it opens the door to new relationships with other people in my community.

How was your January?

How are you welcoming February?

As always, thank you for reading, and listening!
